About DVN:

The mission of the Domestic Violence Network is to change the culture that leads to domestic violence through advocacy, education, and collaboration.

Our work is focused on education with the idea that informing our community on issues related directly and indirectly to domestic and other types of violence will change the culture that leads to that violence. DVN does not provide direct service to victims/survivors. Our work is heavily based on prevention, so our direct service providers can focus on serving those impacted by this human issue. We are currently seeking to fill the position for a Community Wide Plan Intern in our small, but dynamic organization.

About the position:

The Community Wide Plan Intern supports the Director of Strategic Initiatives in the implementation of the Community Wide Plan (CWP), which is currently Beyond Equity, providing support to the community as they accomplish the goals and objectives, tracking the accomplishments. Responsibilities also include tabling at community events, canvassing neighborhoods, and grassroots community outreach. This is a 15-week long internship..


INTERNSHIP FUNCTIONS:

  • Engage community members in DVN collaborative projects
  • Coordinate with community partners to host a DVN resource table at community events and run the table
  • Canvass high risk zip codes in Indianapolis with resources related to domestic violence
  • Build relationships and partnerships with residents and grassroots community members to further prevention and intervention efforts of domestic violence
  • Coordinate events related to the CWP including, but not limited to: securing event space for needed dates, coordinating with vendors and volunteers, coordinating with internal staff as needed, and managing Eventbrites

Note: The internship functions may be revised or updated as facility needs dictate.

INTERNSHIP DELIVERABLES:
These are deliverables we are certain will be part of this program. There may be other goals the intern has that they want to incorporate. Similarly, deliverables will likely present themselves organically as we move through programming, and those may also be added to the following:

  • Coordinate monthly events in the Martindale-Brightwood Community, at least 3
  • Reach out to 25 community members and/or organizations building a list of contacts as you connect
  • From those 25 connections, begin to foster relationships with 5-7 of those folks/organizations to bring them further into the CWP events, functions, and activities
  • Table at least 3 community events
  • Write 1 DVN blog post

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the time
  • Must possess valid drivers license and have access to reliable transportation
  • Consistently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, and printer
  • Must be able to converse with others and express yourself effectively and accurately
  • Occasionally needs to lift up to 20 lbs to set up/tear down events, may require stairs

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some availability to work varying hours including evenings and weekends when community events and other activities create the necessity

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Outgoing personality, experience in building strong professional and collaborative relationships is a plus
  • Experience in or willingness to learn teaching or leading workshops, training sessions, or meetings
  • Willingness to learn nonprofit organization functions
  • Eagerness and willingness to learn about domestic violence issues and stay on top of emerging trends
  • Comfortable with public speaking and strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Experience in Google Suite programs
  • Resourcefulness in solving problems
  • Customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • An understanding of project management is a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to organize and coordinate meetings
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and obtain results within allotted time
  • Ability to respond to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently
  • Ability to work while demonstrating empathy, flexibility, openness, sensitivity, and awareness

About your supervisor:

Rebecca Berry is the Director of Strategic Initiatives at The Domestic Violence Network. Her background is in education and human development, including psychology, sociology and anthropology. She has had the privilege to take part in community engagement for the last 12+ years, including teaching at-risk youth, directing non-profit programs and working as a direct service provider to trafficked young women. Outside of work, she is a trauma-informed yoga teacher who loves going on long walks with her partner and their dog, taking naps, curating Spotify playlists, reading about trauma and the brain, and eating Gushers.

This is a part-time (16 hour/week), paid internship. This is a 15-week long internship ideally running from February 19, 2024 – May 24, 2024.
