About DVN:
The mission of the Domestic Violence Network is to change the culture that leads to domestic violence through advocacy, education, and collaboration. Our work is focused on education with the idea that informing our community on issues related directly and indirectly to domestic and other types of violence will change the culture that leads to that violence. DVN does not provide direct service to victims/survivors. Our work is heavily based on prevention, so our direct service providers can focus on serving those impacted by this human issue.
We are currently seeking to fill an internship opportunity as a Social Media and Marketing Intern within our small, but dynamic organization.
About the internship:
The Social Media and Marketing Intern will work to create awareness campaigns that align with domestic violence prevention and our community wide plan, BEYOND EQUITY. This intern will learn the functions of marketing in a non-profit environment and will develop a marketing plan in collaboration with the Marketing Team that spans 1 year. This intern will also have the opportunity to shadow members of the team across programs.
We’re seeking applicants to create a diverse work culture that more closely match the diversity of the communities we serve and are hoping to include voices from all backgrounds to represent and promote DVN.
As a Social Media and Marketing Intern, a typical day could include the following:
- Working with various members of the team to understand their needs in terms of marketing
- Working with the Associate Director and Marketing Manager research, develop, and write a marketing plan that spans 1 year
- Create visual awareness campaigns
- Manage social media and create content for various platforms
- Attending and generating/gathering content from various trainings and events within DVNs programs
- Collaborating with other team members to create marketing materials for DVN trainings and events
Note: The internship functions may be revised or updated as facility needs dictate.
INTERNSHIP DELIVERABLES:
These are deliverables we are certain will be part of this program. There may be other goals the intern has that they want to incorporate. Similarly, deliverables will likely present themselves organically as we move through programming, and those may also be added to the following:
- Written Marketing Plan
- 4 social media awareness campaigns – at least 2 campaigns for TikTok specifically
- Posting to platforms regularly, with a focus on TikTok, X, and Threads
- Program marketing materials when helpful
- Develop templates for campaigns using Canva
ESSENTIAL INTERNSHIP FUNCTIONS:
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the time
- Must possess valid drivers license and have access to reliable transportation
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, and printer
- Must be able to converse with others and express yourself effectively and accurately
- Occasionally needs to lift up to 20 lbs to set up/tear down events, may require stairs
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be available to work varying hours including evenings and weekends when community events and other activities create the necessity.
HELPFUL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & INTERESTS:
- Familiarity with basic design concepts
- Understanding of color theory
- Understanding of the functions of marketing, in a nonprofit setting is a plus
- Social media skills
- Comfortability in front of a camera and gathering content
- Ability to write clearly and thoughtfully
- Strong research skills
- Ability to learn and understand topics of and surrounding domestic violence
- A working knowledge of Canva & TikTok/video editing is a plus
- Ability and willingness to ask questions

About your supervisor:
Our Associate Director Amanda has a background in corporate marketing and has been a graphic designer for over 10 years. In 2019 she made a full transition to non-profit work after being an active volunteer for many years, and after serving an Americorps term was hired at DVN. In 2020 she graduated with a masters degree in Public Affairs in Nonprofit Management from IUPUI O’Neill SPEA. She has a strong background in nonprofit marketing and research and has helped many organizations develop marketing strategies to accomplish various goals. In her spare time, she works as a graphic designer and marketing consultant. She moved out of Indiana during the pandemic, so supervision will happen virtually.
