Workshop Description:

Victims of domestic violence and abuse make up a large percentage of the ever-increasing number of people who are incarcerated and/or charged with crimes.  Consequently, community-based advocates are finding that more and more battered women charged with crimes are in need of advocacy and support.  In this workshop, we will discuss some of the ways that battered women end up in the system as defendants, and the detrimental impact that criminal charges can have on a survivor’s safety and options.  We will explore concrete strategies for advocating on behalf of victims of domestic violence who have been charged with crimes, and discuss the role of advocates as part of legal defense teams.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand some of the ways that victims of battering and abuse end up in the legal system as defendants.
  2. Participants will learn about individual advocacy strategies for working with battered women charged with crimes.
  3. Participants will be more informed regarding the role of advocates as part of legal defense teams, and the direct and indirect consequences of arrests and convictions that can impact domestic violence survivors’ safety.
  4. Participants will be able to identify sources for ongoing training and support for working with domestic violence survivors who are charged with crimes.
