Take this Show on the Road: DVN to Present at SIX Conferences in TWO weeks!

By: Mary-Margaret Sweeney, DVN, Director of Community Engagement

Happy October, Network! We have been busy here at DVN, bringing our training to central Indiana audiences as usual, but last week, we took it to the national level! Later this week? INTERNATIONAL!

DVN was thrilled to learn that we were accepted to present at the Futures without Violence conference this year. Our director of programs, Lindsay, and I have been working for over a year on our workshop “Cookies, crafts, and consent: Facilitating discussions on sexuality and teen dating abuse in diverse settings.” When we learned we had been invited to share our work at the national level in San Francisco, we knew we needed to add to our bag of tricks. Many meetings and drafts later we have this flipbook handout for facilitators:

Lindsay and Mary-Margaret in action at the conference in San Francisco!

The booklet is intended for adults working with youth who may be asked to facilitate conversations around healthy relationships, sexual health, and related “touchy” subjects. We hope to leave it with school social workers, classroom teachers, camp counselors…you name it! Look for more details soon about how you can get yours!

With San Francisco checked off my list, I head into Domestic Violence Awareness Month with five more conferences ahead! Tuesday October 3 I will be presenting on domestic violence in the workplace at the 2017 Indiana Health and Wellness Summit. On Thursday October 5, we’re going international! Did you know that this year’s Interpride is being held here in Indianapolis? This is wonderful for our city–and DVN! I will be co-presenting on domestic violence in the LGBTQ+ community with Indy Pride’s executive director Chris Handberg. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because Chris was our director of programs and research here at DVN until this past June. We are so excited to reunite and bring our work to an international audience.

Next week, I will travel with our executive director, Kelly McBride, to present our Community Wide Plan, Intersections, at three different conferences…in three days! The Root Cause Coalition in Louisville, KY; ICADV’s 35th Annual Conference; and Latino Coalition’s Beyond Breaking the Cycle of Violence. If you plan on attending any of them, we sure wouldn’t mind
you saying hello (and bringing us coffee)!

We’ll catch our breath and settle in for the rest of Domestic Violence Awareness Month with fundraising events, regular trainings all over the community, and, hopefully, spending time with all of you. Thank you for your support, Network!
