The Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP) is pleased to announce a webinar on advocacy and support for military and veteran LGBTQ survivors of domestic violence. This interactive session will focus on strategies for support and advocacy when working with LGBTQ survivors, with a particular emphasis on the needs and experiences of LGBTQ service members and veterans. This webinar will center the importance of building awareness of the context of LGBTQ people’s lives as a key component in supporting creative, effective advocacy with LGBTQ survivors. Through story sharing and examples, we will expand our understanding of the strengths, vulnerabilities, and barriers LGBTQ survivors face in navigating systems and communities, as well as addressing the unique considerations for safety planning and advocacy rooted in the lived experiences of LGBTQ survivors. Whether you work in the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, or in a community-based program, this webinar will enhance your knowledge and skills to more effectively and sensitively serve military and veteran LGBTQ domestic violence survivors.

Presenter: Kristin Tucker, Senior Program Manager, National Training & Technical Assistance Program Coordinator, The Northwest Network of Bisexual, Trans, Lesbian & Gay Survivors of Abuse.

Moderator: Glenna Tinney, Senior Advisor, Military Advocacy Program, BWJP.

Description: What do we need to know to more effectively serve military-related LGBTQ domestic violence survivors? Do existing systems need to be changed or enhanced to better serve this population? Can’t we just apply what we already know about advocacy and support to serve military-related LGBTQ survivors? Are the needs of LGBTQ domestic violence survivors who are serving in the military or have served in the military different from other LGBTQ survivors? Are there issues faced by this population that might be different from those who have never served in the military? This webinar will provide information about how important contextual analysis is to understand and be able to provide culturally sensitive and effective services to military-related LGBTQ domestic violence survivors.
